Today I’m going to share with you a book that I recently had the pleasure to read called “How To Set A Table”. The book is written by Potter. POTTER STYLE, an imprint of the Crown Publishing Group, is a lifestyle imprint specializing in design, fashion, humor, health, stationery, and other paper products.
If you’re like me, you know how to set the table. The fork goes on the left and the knife on the right. That’s as far as it usually goes for me. (Did I ACTUALLY just admit that?) Now you can see why picking up “How To Set A Table” was a smart move on my part.
The book first goes over the dinnerware basics, glasses, flatware and linens. Then there are the choices of your settings. The casual setting, which has only a few pieces, but everything that you will need for your meal is what my family uses most. The formal setting has many pieces and one that I was eager to improve on. There is even a mixing and matching setting which uses lots of color and different pieces. I’m definitely excited to give this a try.
I don’t own cloth napkins. There. I said it. But I do know how to fold them now, thanks to this book. Will I be adorning my table each night with cloth napkins? Nope. But I’m excited to go buy some for my next fancy schmancy dinner. There is a whole section on how to fold napkins in different ways.
My favorite section of the book are the finishing touches you can add to the table to make it pretty like candles, flowers and natural ingredients. So many lovely ideas and opportunities to add your style to the table.
If you thought setting a table was only for sit-down dinners then you will be surprised. A table can be set for many occasions like a holiday breakfast or breakfast bar, take-out night, movie night, a picnic, a backyard BBQ, dinner for two, an open-house, a potluck or even afternoon tea.
I learned a lot from “How To Set A Table” and was also pleasantly surprised by how many different setting ideas there are to choose from. If you have ever been challenged with setting a table and which fork goes where, I do recommend this book. I am sure you will benefit from it as much as I did.
