Today I’m going to show you How To Make Easter Chick Cupcakes! Cake decorating can seem intimidating, but this step-by-step tutorial makes it easy. After baking up your favorite cupcake recipe or cake mix, we’re going to whip up some frosting and pipe some chicks!
Friends, I am ALL about the cuteness and these Easter chick cupcakes are IT! I mean….look at their little faces. 😄 I cannot even tell you how much fun I had creating these little cuties. Not only are they adorable, but they are easy to make too.
The first thing we’re going to do here is bake some cupcakes. You can make cake mix cupcakes or your favorite scratch recipe in any flavor. I used a cake mix in this instance and it made 24 cupcakes.
After your cupcakes have baked and cooled, we’re going to need some frosting. When I say frosting, I don’t mean the store-bought kind you get in the can at the grocery store. Unfortunately, that frosting is too thin for piping. If you don’t have a recipe for a frosting that can be piped, you can find my best buttercream frosting here. You can pipe it and it’s DELICIOUS.
Once your frosting is made, we’re going to go ahead and color it yellow, orange and black. You will need about 1/4 cup of black and 1/4 cup of orange. The remaining amount of frosting will be colored yellow. I use Wilton gel colors when coloring my frostings. When using the gel colors, a little goes a long way. Using a toothpick, add some gel to your frosting and mix. Use a clean toothpick every time you dip into the color. Add color a little bit at a time until you have the color you like.
Once you have all of your frosting colors made, it’s time to set up our piping bags.
I used 12-inch Wilton piping bags. You will need three different decorating tips for these cupcakes, #352, #233 and two #3 tips. You will also need a coupler. A coupler is a two-part device that lets you change decorating tips without changing the bag. The two parts of the coupler are the base and the ring. You will also need some piping bag ties. You can click the links I have here and order from Amazon or you can also purchase all of these supplies at Walmart or Michael’s stores.
The first thing we’re going to do is prepare our bags. You will need three piping bags. In one bag, we will be using a coupler. Unscrew your coupler and insert into the bag, narrow side down. Using a scissor, make a mark on the bag about three or four threads up. Pull coupler out a little and you will see the scissor mark. Cut along the mark and then push coupler into the bag until it’s snug. Now you will place tip #352 onto the coupler and screw on.
With the other two piping bags, we will just insert tip #233 into one and #3 into the other. The same way we inserted the coupler, we will insert each tip into each of the two bags. Push the tip down into the bag as far as it will go and make a marking onto the bag with a scissor about 1/4 way up the tip. Pull the tip out and cut along the mark. Push tip back into bag until it fits snug.
Now we will be filling our bags with frosting. Grab the bag with tip #233 and fold it over your hand like in the first photo below. With a spoon or small spatula, fill up bag about half-way with your yellow frosting. Twist bag and fasten with a piping bag tie.
With the bag that has tip #3 inserted, fill up with your black frosting, twist and fasten with tie.
With the bag that has the coupler inserted, fill up with your orange frosting, twist and fasten with tie.
We will begin decorating our cupcake with the yellow frosting. This will make the fluffy feathers of the Easter chick. Holding your bag at a 90-degree angle over the cupcake, squeeze and pull up with your bag and then release. You will pipe all around the cupcake until each one is covered. I started around the edges and went in. You can pull out the fur in different directions to make it look random.
Next, we will be using our black frosting to make the eyes of our chicks. Holding bag at a 90-degree angle above the cupcake, squeeze until your eye is formed, stop squeezing and lift away. Make two eyes on each cupcake.
Using the orange frosting with tip #352, we will make the beaks for the chicks. Holding the bag at a 90-degree angle over the cupcake and into the fur, squeeze and pull up until your beak is formed. The two points of the tip must be vertical (so that it looks like an open beak). Stop squeezing and lift. Make beaks on each cupcake.
To make the feet, unscrew the #352 tip off of the orange frosting bag. Screw on the other tip #3. Holding the bag at a 90-degree angle over the cupcake, squeeze and pull down making a small line. Stop squeezing and pull away. Make three lines until a foot is formed. Make two feet on each cupcake.
It may take some time to get used to piping frosting onto a cupcake, but with a little practice, you will be a master!
